Kimberly Butler Rainen

Estate Attorney of Kimberly Butler Rainen

Kim Rainen has always believed that estate planning is about more than just legal documents—it’s about protecting the people and values that matter most. As a parent she understands firsthand the importance of planning ahead, especially when others depend on you.

Her work is driven by a simple goal: to help individuals and families feel confident and prepared for whatever life brings. Whether it’s choosing a guardian for your children, coordinating care for aging parents, or making sure your legacy is secure, Kim brings a steady hand and clear guidance to every step of the process. This work is about more than legal documents; they are acts of love and protection.

Today, Kim helps individuals and families across Andover, the Merrimack Valley, and the North Shore build thoughtful, practical estate plans—no matter their stage of life. Whether you’re welcoming a new child, planning for retirement, or navigating care for a loved one, Kim brings clarity and compassion to the process, so you can move forward with confidence.

Clients often say that Kim makes estate planning feel doable. She breaks down complex legal concepts into plain English, listens carefully to your priorities, and crafts plans that truly work—both on paper and in real life.

Kim’s legal journey began at Suffolk Probate & Family Court in Boston, where she clerked during law school. She was drawn to the emotional heart of legal work: helping families through change. After exploring several practice areas, she returned to estate planning and has devoted her career to it ever since.

A graduate of New England Law | Boston (cum laude, Law Review) and Clark University, Kim is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Her previous experience includes roles with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office and Suffolk Probate & Family Court.

Outside the office, Kim is an active member of her community. She serves as co-chair for the Disability and Elder Law section of the Boston Bar Association, as a Board member for Guardian Community Trust, Inc., a disability pooled trust supporting seniors across Massachusetts, a member of the Council of Aging Board and the Elder and Disabled Tax Fund, both for the town of Andover. Previously, she has served as President and Secretary of the Merrimack Valley Estate Planning Council and volunteered for fundraising efforts to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She has been honored as a Super Lawyers Rising Star and a Five Star Wealth Professional. The Law Offices of Kimberly Butler Rainen was honored as the Best Law Firm for Estate Planning by The Andovers Magazine, Summer 2025.

Kim lives in Andover with her family and is proud to serve her community and neighbors as both a legal advisor and a local resource. She understands that every family is different—and she’ll meet you right where you are, guiding you to a plan that reflects your values and protects what matters most.

What Is the Cost of Estate Planning?

While tailoring a plan to you and your loved one’s needs is certainly more expensive than creating a will online, when it comes to estate planning, you get what you pay for.

Estate planning is a worthy investment regardless of the size of your bank account. Furthermore, it only makes sense that the more assets you have, the more careful you will want to be about what happens to them — and who gets to control them. Complex estate planning can cost a pretty penny up-front, but this is almost always a fraction of what would otherwise be lost to taxes, probate and other lost benefits, such as tax exemptions and the cost of eldercare.

At The Law Offices of Kimberly Butler Rainen, we are here to make the process of estate planning as easy as possible for you. We provide each of our clients the same comprehensive, attentive approach we have given to our family when planning for their futures.
